A deeply insightful tale, careening through history, the Road to Character inevitably extracts some exciting anthropological information in what is essentially, some of the most beautiful prose one can expect. I am sure you will love this book. It tops the list for 2017.
New York Op-Ed columnist David Brooks is a journalist with few parallels. As a nonfiction writer, his degree of insight is beyond compare. In his new book, this author broaches a subject that is not an obvious priority to most people today even though he persuasively argues that energies expended on nourishing the soul, building character are the prerequisites for exercising a full and useful existence. In so doing, he attempts to answer age old questions about the aspects of human fulfilment, the paths to happiness and what is the meaning of all of it.
It is a privilege and task he takes quite seriously, evidenced by the bulk of his life’s work with the founding of Kwani?- an African Literary Magazine; that has curated some of the African literary content over the last decade.
Granted, owing to the vastness of the human condition, identifying an optimal interaction with our earthly environment cannot be comprehensively compressed into a single book, but I found that the anecdotal style of argumentation provided ample evidence that there exist examples of how we should aspire to engage such that our lives here on earth may come close to being meaningful. That is the eternal goal. It is a privilege and task he takes quite seriously, evidenced by the bulk of his life’s work with the founding of Kwani?- an African Literary Magazine; that has curated some of the African literary content over the last decade.
