A Good African Story—Andrew Rugasira

I have never enjoyed a book as greedily as I did A good African Story.

In penning his journey, Andrew Rugasira has once again exhibited his pioneer spirit by being the first of many local entrepreneurs to share their journey through written works. I have never enjoyed a book as greedily as I did A good African Story. Rugasira succeeds in painting a vivid picture of the travails that assail entrepreneurial undertakings by baring all that transpired on this obstacle course. He slays the beast when he sets out to create a global standard coffee brand and wins.

Rugasira’s story is relatable, unpretentious and sincere. You share in his glorious conquest of challenge upon challenge from hovering loans, to botched contracts and unfulfilled promises by those he depended on. I was rooting for him throughout.

Having teetered on the brink of certain failure innumerable times, he kept rising like the proverbial phoenix from the ashes.

The most apt description I can give this book is ‘simply inspirational’. If this does not get your creative entrepreneurial juices flowing, there is little chance anything else will. However an important component of his message is his reliance on a support system of family, friends and loyal employees who conspired to prop him up when the chips were down. Having teetered on the brink of certain failure innumerable times, he kept rising like the proverbial phoenix from the ashes.

By writing this book, Andrew Rugasira has cemented his position as an indispensable entrepreneurial icon and has provided an invaluable template for all wannabe entrepreneurs. He has undoubtedly inspired everyone that has come into contact with his story. I know I was. Compulsory reading this one is.

There is an additional dimension in the book where Rugasira also furnishes us with a lucid assessment of the economic history of Uganda and makes a valiant attempt to amplify very crucial causal links between past economic events and our current economic realities. In so doing he provides a very useful context for understanding the economy in which we operate given a deeper appreciation of the historical perspective.
