Becoming is a very personal rendition of the trans-formative potential of social mobility in shattering class distinctions, in breaking the barriers to progress and achievement.
The Obama family and story is polarizing by default. It holds immense promise for believers and spells an agonizing future for the ultra conservative quota who face an uncertain terrain in perpetuating their rigid (and racist) belief system. One would be hard pressed to find an adult alive today who doesn’t know with reasonable familiarity the story of the first black family in the White House. Thankfully this book merely glosses over these areas.
Becoming is a story of thrift in the context of stacked odds and tilted fields. It is for this reason that Becoming inspires, provokes and most importantly stands out as an explicit exhortation for the fatigued liberal to return to the battlefield against strong headed bigotry.
Becoming was #1 on NYT best seller list
Michelle Obama carries the flag of defiant achievement and wields it like a sword to advocate for the lasting principles of justice, fairness and equity; principles she has lived and the same ones that have seen her through.
There is also successful reportage on the difficult dynamics of public service and family, the impossible balancing act and the inevitable trade-offs. Overall, what Becoming succeeds in doing is crafting a glorious story of past progress while remaining instructive for an optimistic version of the future.
